Have you ever had one of those days where everything that could go wrong did go wrong? Did you ever see the film The Truman Show where Jim Carrey played a character who was born into a fabricated work of soap opera as the only one who didn’t know he was surrounded by fiction? There’s a wonderful moment where he is in a desperate hurry so he jumps into his car and drives off to join the main road. As he turns the corner from nowhere three other cars suddenly happen to drive in front of him.
Sometimes we are thwarted by forces beyond our control and our patience gets stretched to the point where we want to lash out at someone. Maybe I’m old fashioned but it seems more and more that what used to be simple has become incredibly complicated.
Our recent show had pieces of steel deck for the choir to stand on. We have been using this arrangement for 30 years but these days you have to jump through more hoops to arrive at the same place. The poor steel deck installer had to complete very complex paperwork about loads and structures that have been standard for years.
Sometimes it’s a wonder that anything happens because there always seems to be someone else needing yet more official information about things we already know.
We’re more risk averse because over the years litigious American lawyers have made us so. Of course, we need to be safe and compliant but there comes a point where you question the point of a computer or a person that always seems to say no for no good reason.
So that’s my rant over but if you find similar moments in your life you have my sympathy.
