About Theatretrain

Inspiring Young Performers Since 1992…

For more than 30 years, Theatretrain has been helping children and young people discover the excitement of performing through acting, singing and dance.

Founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Kevin Dowsett, Theatretrain has grown into a nationwide performing arts organisation, giving generations of young people opportunities to develop their skills, grow in confidence and experience the thrill of performing.

Over the years, Kevin has taught performers including Catherine Tate, Denise Gough and Kelly Brook, while thousands more Theatretrain students have taken the confidence, creativity, friendships and memories they gained with them long beyond the stage.

Our Performing Arts Classes in Norwich and Wymondham

Our weekly performing arts classes take place at Hellesdon High School on Saturday mornings, Cringleford Primary School on Wednesday evenings and Silfield Oak Primary Academy in Wymondham on Thursday evenings.

Across our classes, children and young people aged 4–18 enjoy acting, singing and dancing in a fun and supportive environment, developing their confidence, creativity and performance skills while making friends and enjoying performing.

Theatretrain Main Company (Ages 6-18)

Our three-hour Saturday Main Company is our flagship performing arts programme, giving students dedicated training in acting, singing and dance with specialist teachers for each discipline.

Students work in age-appropriate groups, developing their skills and confidence, making friends and having fun while working towards exciting performance opportunities throughout the year.

Theatretrain Express (Ages 5-11)

Our 90-minute Theatretrain Express classes bring acting, singing and dancing together in one fun and energetic after-school session!

Designed for children aged 5–11, students build confidence, creativity and performance skills while making friends and enjoying performing together.

Join us on Wednesday evenings in Cringleford or Thursday evenings in Wymondham.

Performance is a big part of Theatretrain. Students have opportunities to put the acting, singing and dance skills they develop in class into practice through shows, showcases and exciting performance experiences.

Every other year, students also have the opportunity to take part in Theatretrain’s large-scale national production, with previous shows taking place at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and West End theatres.

For students who are interested in exploring performing professionally, we also work with Goldmans Management to offer additional opportunities including screen acting, audition experience and professional headshots.

Answering your Theatretrain Norwich FAQs

Which Theatretrain class is right for my child?

The best Theatretrain class for your child will depend on their age, what they’d like to get from their sessions and what works best for your family.

For children aged 6–18 who would like a more in-depth performing arts experience, our Saturday Main Company in Hellesdon is our flagship programme. Students spend three hours each week training in acting, singing and dance, rotating between specialist teachers and working in age-appropriate groups. Main Company students also have the opportunity to take part in our large-scale national Theatretrain productions every other year, alongside local performances and showcases. The longer sessions, specialist training and additional performance opportunities are reflected in the higher Main Company fee.

Our 90-minute Express classes in Cringleford and Wymondham are a great option for children aged 5–11 who would prefer a shorter after-school session. Children are taught together as one group, so they can also be a lovely choice for siblings of different ages who would like to attend and take part together. Express students still enjoy acting, singing and dance each week and work towards informal showcases for parents at the end of each term.

For children aged 4–5, Theatretrain MINIS is specially designed as a fun and age-appropriate introduction to singing, dancing and acting. Five-year-olds can choose between MINIS or our Cringleford and Wymondham Express classes. If your child is 5 and Saturday mornings work for your family, we would usually recommend MINIS as a great place to start, as some younger children can find an after-school session finishing at 6pm a long day after being at school. They can then progress to an Express class or our Main Company, which is available from age 6.

Whichever class you choose, our 2-for-1 taster offer gives your child the chance to experience Theatretrain before deciding whether it’s the right fit.

Can shy or less confident children join Theatretrain?

Absolutely. Children don’t need to be naturally confident or outgoing to enjoy Theatretrain. We welcome children with all different personalities, and our classes provide a friendly and supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to join in at their own pace.

Through acting, singing and dance, working together with others and gradually trying new things, we often see children grow in confidence both on and off stage. There’s no pressure to be the loudest person in the room – we want every child to feel comfortable being themselves and proud of what they achieve.

How much do Theatretrain Norwich classes cost?

Our Theatretrain classes have different fees depending on the type and length of session.

Main Company (ages 6–18) – £83 per month by Direct Debit for three hours of acting, singing and dance every Saturday.

Theatretrain Express in Cringleford and Wymondham (ages 5–11) – £50 per month by Direct Debit for a 90-minute weekly session.

Theatretrain MINIS (ages 4–5) – £50 per month by Direct Debit for a 90-minute Saturday morning session.

For our Main Company and Express classes, we offer a 50% discount for families receiving Universal Credit (proof of eligibility is required), as well as a 50% sibling discount for the youngest sibling when more than one child from the same family attends.

New students can try Theatretrain before joining with our 2-for-1 taster offer – £25 for two Main Company sessions or £15 for two Express or MINIS sessions.

If your child decides to join Theatretrain after their taster sessions, there is a one-off £20 registration fee.

Can my child try Theatretrain before joining?

Absolutely! We offer a 2-for-1 taster across all of our Theatretrain Norwich classes, giving your child the chance to attend two sessions before deciding whether they’d like to join us regularly.

They can meet their teachers and the other children, take part in acting, singing and dance, and get a real feel for Theatretrain with no pressure to commit.

Our 2-for-1 taster costs £25 for two Main Company sessions, or £15 for two Theatretrain MINIS sessions or two Theatretrain Express sessions at Cringleford or Wymondham.
