When people hear “performing arts classes”, it’s easy to assume they’re only for children who dream of being on stage.
But the reality at Theatretrain is very different.
Not every child who walks through the door wants to be famous. In fact, many don’t. Some are shy, some are simply curious, and others are just looking for something fun to do on a Saturday morning. And yet, week after week, they keep coming back.
So what is it that makes Theatretrain so appealing?
One of the biggest reasons is that there’s no expectation to be anything other than yourself. Children are encouraged to take part, try new things and enjoy the experience – but there’s no pressure to be the best or to stand out. That creates a safe and welcoming environment where children feel comfortable to join in at their own pace.
For many children, that sense of safety is everything. It allows them to relax, open up and gradually build confidence. A child who might not want to be centre stage can still take part fully – whether that’s through group work, ensemble pieces or simply being part of the class. Every role matters, and every contribution is valued.
Another reason children love Theatretrain is the opportunity to express themselves. In school or other environments, there can be a strong focus on getting things “right”. At Theatretrain, creativity is encouraged. There’s space to be imaginative, playful and expressive. Children can explore different characters, emotions and ideas in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.
Friendships also play a huge part. Theatretrain brings together children who might not otherwise meet, creating a shared space built on creativity and teamwork. Over time, those shared experiences lead to genuine friendships. For some children, it becomes the place where they feel most understood and accepted.
There’s also a strong sense of achievement – without the pressure. Children develop skills in singing, dancing and acting, but they also experience progress in smaller, personal ways. Speaking up more in class. Joining in with confidence. Trying something new without hesitation. These moments might seem small, but they mean a great deal.
Importantly, Theatretrain helps children build life skills that go far beyond performing. Communication, teamwork, resilience and self-belief are all developed naturally through the sessions. These are skills that support children in school, social situations and future opportunities – whatever path they choose.
And that’s the key point – Theatretrain isn’t about creating stars (although some children may go on to pursue performing). It’s about helping every child grow into a more confident, capable version of themselves.
For parents, this often comes as a pleasant surprise. What starts as a fun activity quickly becomes something much more meaningful. They see their child becoming more confident, more engaged and more willing to take on new challenges.
And for the children, it’s simple.
They enjoy it.
They feel part of something.
They feel good about themselves.
So no – not every child wants to be famous.
But every child deserves a place where they can grow, belong and shine in their own way.
And that’s exactly why they love Theatretrain.
