End Of term Sharing of work 7th December 2024
As we move deeper into autumn, it’s time for one of the most exciting parts of our year: beginning rehearsals for our end-of-term sharing of work! This term, we’re thrilled to dive into “The Snow Queen,” a classic tale that our students will bring to life in a unique way. But unlike a traditional full-scale production, our end-of-term sharing is more about the journey than the destination. This format is designed to give our students a chance to showcase the skills they’ve been honing all term and allows family and friends a peek into the creative growth happening in class.
Our end-of-term showcases are always intentionally designed to be a little different from conventional performances. Instead of focusing on polish and perfection, they emphasize student-driven creativity and the raw expression of skills. Here’s a look at why we love this format, and how it gives our students a rich, hands-on experience to help them build confidence, skills, and ownership over their work.
Embracing Creative Challenges with a Short Rehearsal Window
Our “Snow Queen” sharing piece is prepared in a purposefully short period, creating a high-energy and fast-paced rehearsal environment. This tight schedule brings its own unique challenges and helps our students develop the ability to make quick, intentional choices. By working under these time constraints, they’re encouraged to trust their instincts, work collaboratively, and explore creative solutions on the fly.
Because the showcase doesn’t require a full production timeline, we can reserve most of the autumn term for process and skill-building. We know that always being “in rehearsal mode” can limit students’ development. Instead, we focus on developing their foundations in acting, movement, voice, and character work, so they are prepared and ready to shine when we enter the rehearsal phase. By focusing on technique and foundational skills for most of the term, our students enter rehearsals with confidence and are more empowered to contribute in creative and meaningful ways.
A Unique, Student-Driven Process
One of the most rewarding aspects of our sharing work is the way students are involved in crafting their scenes and characters. After our creative team lays out the general plot outline, the students take the lead, working together to create the details, dialogue, and dynamics of each scene. They’re not just learning lines—they’re making choices, trying new things, and discovering ways to embody their roles.
Through this process, students learn the importance of character development and creative collaboration. They have the opportunity to make choices about their character’s motivations, backstory, and unique qualities. By creating and shaping their own scenes, they develop a strong sense of ownership over the material, making the performance feel truly their own.
Showcasing Skills, Not Just a Show
Our end-of-term sharing is a celebration of skill-building and creativity, not just a final performance. Throughout rehearsals, students put their skills into practice in ways that stretch their abilities. Here are just a few of the skills that this project helps develop:
- Characterization: As students create and shape their own roles, they learn to inhabit their characters fully, experimenting with vocal choices, physicality, and emotional expression to bring their roles to life.
- Collaboration: Developing a scene together requires open communication, compromise, and teamwork. Students learn to give and receive feedback, make group decisions, and support each other creatively—skills that go far beyond the stage.
- Adaptability and Quick Thinking: With a limited rehearsal period, students learn to think on their feet, adapting to new ideas and changes with flexibility and resilience. This experience helps them build confidence in their ability to tackle challenges with a positive attitude.
- Problem-Solving: The nature of our process means that students are constantly making creative choices, whether it’s adjusting the staging of a scene, refining their character’s motivations, or troubleshooting technical aspects. This builds their critical thinking skills and prepares them to handle the unexpected.
A Showcase with Heart and Impact
Our end-of-term sharing isn’t about delivering a perfectly polished performance; it’s about giving students the opportunity to shine in their own unique ways. Parents, families, and friends get to witness not just the final product, but the hard work, creativity, and commitment that students have invested throughout the term. The sharing piece highlights each student’s growth, allowing us all to celebrate the skills they’ve developed and the progress they’ve made.
