Will My Child Fit In? A Guide for Parents of Shy, Energetic or First-Time Performers

If you’re considering performing arts classes for your child but keep wondering, “Will they actually enjoy it?” or “Will they even join in?” You’re not alone. As parents, we know our kids best. Some are born to be centre stage. Others need time to warm up. Some never stop moving. Others prefer to watch quietly before taking part.

At Theatretrain, we get it. And the truth is, there’s no one type of child who thrives here. We’ve welcomed children who are bouncing off the walls with excitement and children who barely speak in their first few weeks.

And guess what?
They all find their place. 💛

Theatretrain is for the shy kids, the loud kids, and everyone in between

We’re a performing arts school for 4–18 year olds, and every week our students take part in singing, dance, and drama classes  all in one fun, structured session.

But what really makes Theatretrain different is our ethos:
👉 We don’t just build performers. We build confidence, connection, and community.

That means it doesn’t matter if your child has done a dozen shows… or has never stepped on a stage before. We meet them where they are.

What if my child is shy?

Lots of children are naturally quieter, especially in new situations. That’s totally normal. We give them space and time to get comfortable, there’s no pressure to “perform” on day one.

Often, the biggest transformations we see are from children who start off watching quietly at the back… and end up taking a bow at the front of the stage.

One parent recently told us:

“I couldn’t believe it. My daughter barely spoke at school, but by the end of the term she was singing and smiling with confidence I hadn’t seen before.”

What if my child is full of energy (or a bit of a whirlwind)?

We love those kids too! Theatretrain gives them a structured space to express all that wonderful energy. The mix of singing, dance and drama keeps things fresh and varied, no chance to get bored!

They’ll learn to focus, listen, and work as part of a team,  while still getting to move, laugh and create each week.

What if my child has never done anything like this before?

That’s absolutely fine! Most of our new students haven’t had any formal training. You don’t need fancy dance shoes or experience. Just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a water bottle!

Our classes are designed to be welcoming and inclusive, with plenty of support from teachers who are used to working with all kinds of personalities and learning styles.

We’re not looking for the “best” – we’re looking for the real them

Some stage schools focus only on the most confident, the most polished, the most experienced. That’s not us.

At Theatretrain, we believe every child deserves a place to explore their creativity, find their voice, and be celebrated for who they are.

We focus on ensemble-based performance, so nobody gets left behind and everyone plays a role in the final show, whether they’re leading the dance or supporting the group with confidence.

So… will your child fit in at Theatretrain?

Honestly? Yes.

Because we’ve built something more than just a performing arts class.
We’ve built a place where children feel safe, supported, and inspired exactly as they are.

And if you’re still unsure, a paid taster session is a great, no-pressure way to try it out and see how your child responds. Often, parents are amazed at how quickly their child finds their feet.
