What does Theatretrain mean to me?

I have been part of Theatretrain for almost 20 Years

Theatretrain has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember – so long that I can’t even recall what life was like before it! My enduring passion has always been music; I used to wear out cassette tapes with continuous play. Therefore, the music featured in our Theatretrain shows holds a special place in my heart.

Our dedicated students invest months in immersing themselves in the enchanting arrangements crafted by the talented Robert Hyman. These songs become more than just music; they serve as a poignant reminder of the unforgettable moments our students share with us.

Throughout my journey with Theatretrain, Robert’s musical arrangements have become interwoven with my cherished memories. Today, I’d like to share one such poignant memory with you.

Back in 2012, Theatretrain put together a spectacular show called “Now Then,” and the grand finale featured Adele’s emotive song, “Rolling in the Deep.” Robert worked his magic, transforming this song into a breathtaking four-part masterpiece, featuring over 200 kids singing together on the stage.

This unforgettable song later found its place in our 21st Anniversary show at the illustrious O2 Arena, where more than 3,500 kids came together to perform it. What made this show even more special was the fact that, for health and safety reasons, both the teachers and I had the privilege of performing alongside our students. It was a truly remarkable experience, one that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

A few years down the road, I had the pleasure of taking my Theatretrain students to a local recording studio to capture Robert’s arrangement for use in a music video that my students were putting together. Time passed, and I had nearly forgotten about it until one day, as I was rummaging through old CDs, I stumbled upon an ancient DVD of that music video.

Watching it brought tears to my eyes. Memories flooded back, and for a brief moment, it felt as though no time had passed at all. I was eager to share this video with everyone, but alas, I couldn’t figure out how to extract it from the DVD. So, I resorted to a rather crude method, recording the audio and pairing it with some Theatretrain images and video clips.

I must apologize for the less-than-ideal sound quality; after all, it was recorded over a decade ago! Nevertheless, for anyone who was part of the incredible 20@O2 or “Now Then” shows, I hope this video brings back the same joy and nostalgia it brought me. It’s a testament to the enduring magic of Theatretrain and the lasting memories it has given us all.
