And honestly… I completely understand that.
Because if I were choosing something important for my own children, I’d want to know the same.
So before you decide whether Theatretrain might be right for your child… I thought it might help to tell you a little more about me, why I do this, and why it matters so much.
Where It All Started
I’ve been part of Theatretrain for over 20 years.
But I didn’t start as a Director.
I started as a singing teacher.
I have a degree in Popular Music and Technology, specialising in singing, and if you’d told me back then that this would become such a huge part of my life… I’m not sure I’d have believed you.
In fact, when one of my university singing teachers once asked if I’d ever thought about teaching, my answer was something along the lines of:
“No… I don’t really have the patience, and I don’t like children.”
Which now feels slightly ridiculous.
She laughed and told me it would fall into my lap one day… and that I’d love it.
She was absolutely right.
Because what started through singing and creativity slowly became something much bigger than I ever expected.
More Than a Job
Theatretrain has shaped so much of my life.
It’s where I met my husband, Robert, who is the Musical Director for our big London shows.
Our two boys, Dominic and Oliver, have grown up with Theatretrain around them.
Dominic is already far more interested in the business and management side of things (I’m fairly sure he’s planning to take over one day), while Oliver is a born performer and has been part of Theatretrain himself for years.
So when I say Theatretrain is part of my life… I really mean it.
This has never just been work for me.
Creativity Has Always Been Part of Who I Am
Long before I ran Theatretrain centres, I was just a creative kid.
As a teenager, I was the girl in her room writing songs.
In my twenties, I was out performing them.
Creativity has always been one of the biggest parts of who I am… which is probably why Theatretrain felt like home so quickly.
It allowed me to bring creativity, teaching and purpose together.
But over time, something changed.
Because while I still absolutely love the performing arts… what matters most to me now goes far beyond performance.
What Really Matters to Me
Family is everything to me.
My whole life works around my family, because being there for them matters.
And in many ways… that’s how I’ve always approached Theatretrain too.
Not in the sense that we aren’t professional – we absolutely are.
But in the sense that children matter here.
Their confidence matters.
Their happiness matters.
Their friendships matter.
Who they are becoming matters.
I care deeply about creating spaces where children can be themselves.
Somewhere they can create.
Somewhere they can express themselves.
Somewhere they can feel safe enough to grow.
Because in a world of screens, pressure and constant comparison… I think children need that now more than ever.
Why This Is Personal
Growing up, I moved around a lot.
I was often the new child.
The one trying to fit in.
The one who sometimes felt a bit different.
The one who didn’t always find it easy.
And I think that stays with you.
So part of why this matters so much to me now… is because I know how important the right environment can be.
I know what it can feel like when you don’t quite fit.
And I also know how powerful it can be when you finally find a place where you can just be yourself.
That’s what I want for children.
Not perfection.
Not pressure.
Not pretending to be someone they’re not.
Just a place where they can grow into who they are.
So… What Is Theatretrain to Me?
Yes, we teach singing, dancing and drama.
Yes, we care about creativity, quality and giving children amazing opportunities.
But at its heart?
For me, Theatretrain is about helping children:
Use their voice.
Build confidence.
Find their people.
Take up space.
It’s about creating an environment where children can feel accepted, encouraged and challenged in the right ways.
It’s about helping them grow not just as performers… but as people.
