One of my favourite moments at Theatretrain is watching what happens during rehearsals.
A child forgets a line and someone quietly helps them out.
A group spends ten minutes trying to get a scene right and celebrates when it finally clicks.
A new student who didn’t know anyone a few weeks ago is suddenly chatting and laughing with the rest of the group during break.
These moments don’t make it into the show programme, but they’re often where the real learning happens.
Learning That You're Part of Something Bigger
When children first join Theatretrain, they’re often focused on themselves.
Will I remember the dance?
What if I get it wrong?
What if I don’t know anyone?
That’s completely normal.
But as rehearsals progress, something starts to change.
They begin to realise that every performance relies on everybody working together.
The person singing next to them matters.
The person delivering the line before theirs matters.
The person standing at the back of the stage matters.
They learn that their role is important, but so is everybody else’s.
That’s a valuable lesson that reaches far beyond performing arts.
Confidence Grows Through Connection
People often think confidence comes from standing in the spotlight.
What I’ve noticed over the years is that confidence often grows through feeling comfortable as part of a group.
Many children arrive feeling nervous about trying something new.
Then they make a friend.
They find a group they enjoy being with.
They start feeling like they belong.
Before long, they’re volunteering ideas in drama, singing a little louder in class or putting their hand up to help.
The confidence comes gradually because they feel supported by the people around them.

Learning How to Support Other People
One thing I love about group performances is that children quickly learn to look out for each other.
I’ve seen students quietly help someone who has forgotten where they’re meant to stand.
I’ve watched older students encourage younger ones before a performance.
I’ve seen children celebrate a friend’s success just as enthusiastically as their own.
Those moments don’t happen because we teach a lesson called teamwork.
They happen because children spend time working towards a shared goal together.
Real Life Lessons Hidden Inside Rehearsals
Every rehearsal brings opportunities to practise skills that will be useful throughout life.
Patience when something takes longer than expected.
Listening when someone else is speaking.
Compromising when different ideas are suggested.
Persevering when something feels difficult.
None of these skills develop overnight.
They grow little by little through experience.
Theatre simply gives children lots of opportunities to practise them.
What Parents Often Notice
Parents sometimes tell me they signed their child up because they were interested in singing, dance or drama.
A few months later, they’re talking about something completely different.
They’re telling me their child seems more comfortable speaking to new people.
That they’re making friends more easily.
That they’re becoming more independent.
That they’re willing to have a go at things they would have avoided before.
Those changes don’t happen because of one performance or one class.
They happen because children spend time being part of a team.
The Part That Stays With Them
The songs change.
The shows change.
The costumes get packed away until next year.
But the ability to work with others, support people around you and contribute to something bigger than yourself tends to stay.
Every Saturday at Theatretrain Hitchin, Letchworth and Stevenage, children learn singing, dancing and acting.
Along the way, they also learn how to be part of a team.
And that’s a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives.
See What Theatretrain Is Like
If you’d like your child to experience Theatretrain for themselves, we offer paid taster sessions throughout the term.
It’s a chance to join a class, meet the teachers, and see what a Saturday morning at Theatretrain is really like.
You can find out more about our centres in Hitchin, Letchworth and Stevenage and book a taster session when you’re ready.
