What Happens in a Theatretrain Session? A Peek Inside the Classroom

If you're looking for performing arts classes for children and wondering what actually happens when they walk into a session, you’re in the right place!

We know that trying something new can feel like a big step – especially when it’s your child’s first time exploring the world of drama, dance and singing classes.

At Theatretrain, we’ve welcomed thousands of children across the UK to their very first performing arts class. Whether your child is super confident or a little more reserved, we create a warm, welcoming environment where every student feels supported and included.

So, what do our sessions actually look like?

Three Hours, Three Disciplines – One Confidence-Boosting Experience

Each Theatretrain session is three hours long and includes:

1 hour of singing
1 hour of dance
1 hour of drama

This unique structure gives children a well-rounded performing arts education, helping them develop new skills, build friendships, and grow in confidence.

Our classes are suitable for ages 6–18 and are open to all experience levels, no auditions, no pressure, just a chance to shine.

Singing Lessons for Children – But Not Like School Choir!

We kick things off with an engaging, theatrical singing session for kids. This isn’t about standing still and singing scales, our singing classes are full of energy and expression.

Children learn how to:

  • Use their voice safely and confidently

  • Understand breath control and vocal technique

  • Tell the story behind the song

  • Sing as part of a group (in unison and harmony)

  • Perform with emotion and purpose

These musical theatre singing classes help children unlock their voices and express themselves in new, powerful ways, even if they’ve never sung in front of anyone before.

Dance Classes for Kids – Musical Theatre Style

Next up is dance, and no, we don’t expect anyone to be a prima ballerina!

Our children’s dance classes focus on musical theatre choreography, combining fun routines with technique, rhythm and coordination.

Students learn how to:

  • Move confidently and safely

  • Work as a team to perform group routines

  • Improve posture, balance and flexibility

  • Express character and emotion through movement

  • Build strength and stamina in a fun, active way

Whether your child loves to move or is still finding their rhythm, we make it fun and accessible for everyone.

Drama Classes for Kids – Confidence, Creativity, and Connection

Finally, it’s time for drama,  where imaginations run wild!

Our acting classes for children are all about building confidence, encouraging creativity, and developing essential communication skills.

Each week, students explore:

  • Character work and storytelling

  • Voice projection and stage presence

  • Improvisation games and scripted scenes

  • Working with others to build performances

  • Thinking on their feet and trusting their instincts

Drama is a powerful way for children to explore emotions, understand others, and express themselves – skills that go far beyond the stage.

What If My Child Is Shy or Nervous?

You’re not alone, many parents tell us their child is feeling nervous before their first class. That’s completely normal.

Our experienced team knows how to help children settle in gently. We give them time, space and encouragement to join in at their own pace. And there’s always a short break halfway through for water, snacks and chats with new friends.

More Than a Class – It’s a Community

At Theatretrain, we’re not just offering children’s performing arts lessons, we’re creating a supportive community where young people feel valued, included and inspired.

Over time, children develop:

  • Self-belief and confidence

  • Teamwork and communication skills

  • Resilience and independence

  • A lifelong love of performing

And yes, we do shows too, from local performances to West End stages like the Royal Albert Hall! But at the heart of it all, it’s about helping your child discover what they’re capable of.
