At Theatretrain, we believe that learning is an adventure, and every adventure needs a great theme! Each year, we introduce a brand-new theme that drives the creative work we do in our classes and on stage. Whether it’s storytelling, character exploration, or big musical numbers, this theme becomes the backbone of our students’ journey from September to July. It’s one of the things that makes every year at Theatretrain fresh, exciting, and entirely unique.
Let’s dive into why our annual theme is such a powerful part of the Theatretrain experience and how it helps to shape the skills, creativity, and confidence of every student.
Why a Theme?
You may be wondering, why is having a theme so important? Well, at Theatretrain, we’ve found that a theme provides a creative framework that ties everything together. It gives our students a shared purpose, something to explore from different angles as they move through acting, singing, and dancing classes. The theme creates a sense of unity, making each year an unforgettable journey with a fresh focus.
Having a theme also challenges students to think creatively. Each class becomes an opportunity to look at the theme through a new lens—whether they’re acting out a scene, working on choreography, or learning a new song. It sparks curiosity and encourages children to explore the many possibilities within the theme, pushing them to think outside the box and approach their work in innovative ways.
How the Theme Comes to Life in Class
The annual theme is introduced to teachers at the Theatretrain teacher conference and from there, it becomes a driving force behind everything we do. But this isn’t just a “one-size-fits-all” theme—it’s a flexible, creative concept that allows our teachers to shape it in ways that resonate with each age group and class.
For example, one year, the theme might be “The Journey,” which invites students to explore ideas of travel, discovery, and transformation. For the youngest students (ages 6-9), this could mean imagining an adventure to a far-off land, using creative movement and acting exercises to bring that journey to life. For older students, the theme might inspire deeper character exploration, diving into stories of personal growth or overcoming obstacles.
No matter how the theme is interpreted, it encourages students to think beyond the surface of the material. They’re not just learning lines, lyrics, or steps—they’re exploring ideas, feelings, and concepts that connect them to the work in a deeper, more meaningful way.
The Autumn Term Sharing: A Sneak Peek for Parents
Parents often wonder what their child is working on during the first half of the Theatretrain year, and the Autumn Term Sharing gives them a glimpse into that process. Unlike a traditional performance, the sharing is an opportunity for students to showcase the skills they’ve been developing in class, all within the framework of the annual theme. It’s not rehearsed or polished, but that’s the beauty of it—it’s spontaneous and authentic.
During the sharing, parents can see their children’s growth in real-time, whether it’s through a short acting scene, a brief dance routine, or a vocal exercise. Each class has about four minutes to demonstrate a piece of the term’s work, and it’s a wonderful chance for parents to understand the importance of process rather than performance at this stage.
The annual theme plays a big role in these sharings, guiding the content and giving each class its unique flavor. While students may not know exactly what they’ll be doing until the moment arrives, the theme serves as the connective tissue that ties everything together. It’s a great way for parents to see how their children are engaging with the theme, learning new skills, and growing in confidence.

How the Theme Evolves Throughout the Year
One of the things that makes Theatretrain so exciting is that the theme isn’t a one-time event—it’s something that evolves throughout the year. From the process-focused autumn term to the production-focused spring and summer terms, the theme is continuously explored in new ways.
As students move into the second half of the year, they begin preparing for their final performance. The annual theme provides a foundation for this production, influencing everything from the storyline to the choreography. By this stage, students have already spent months developing their skills and exploring the theme in class. Now, they have the opportunity to bring it all together in a live performance.
The final show is where the theme truly comes to life on stage, and it’s an incredible experience for students and parents alike. Whether it’s a local performance or a national Theatretrain production, the annual theme ensures that each year is different, meaningful, and memorable.
Why Themes Inspire Creativity and Confidence
Having a theme not only inspires creativity but also gives students a sense of direction and purpose. It encourages them to dig deeper into their work, to think beyond the basic elements of performance, and to explore the meaning behind what they’re doing. This is where creativity truly blossoms—when children are given the freedom to interpret a theme in their own way and express their ideas through acting, singing, and dancing.
It also boosts confidence. The more students engage with the theme, the more they begin to see their own growth and development. They’re not just going through the motions—they’re creating something that has personal meaning to them. And by the time they’re ready to perform, they’ve developed a strong connection to the material, which makes the final performance even more powerful.
For parents, this is a wonderful thing to witness. You’ll see your child not only building skills but also learning to express themselves creatively and confidently. The theme becomes a tool for personal growth, helping students find their voice, take risks, and explore new ideas.
A Unique Experience, Every Year
One of the best things about Theatretrain’s annual theme is that it keeps the experience fresh and exciting, year after year. No two years are ever the same, and students return each September with a new adventure ahead of them. This keeps students engaged, motivated, and eager to see what new creative challenges await them.
For parents, it’s a joy to see how their children respond to each year’s theme and how it shapes their growth as performers and individuals. The theme creates a rich, dynamic experience that helps students develop both their artistic skills and their confidence—giving them something to carry with them long after the final curtain falls.
